Caregiving Experiences and Psychosocial Challenges of Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Qualitative Study

This study aimed to examine the caregiving experiences of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the psychosocial difficulties they encounter during the caregiving process. The study was conducted using a phenomenological design within the qualitative research approach. The study group consisted of 12 parents who were responsible for the care of children diagnosed with ASD. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Four main themes emerged from the analysis: the diagnosis process and changes in daily life, difficulties encountered in caregiving, family and social life and experiences with services, and coping and concerns about the future. The findings indicated that parents experienced difficulties particularly related to their children’s communication and behavioral problems, the need for continuous supervision, negative attitudes within the social environment, special education expenses, and uncertainty about their children’s future. Based on the findings, it is recommended that psychosocial support for parents be strengthened, collaboration among health, education, and social services be improved, and independent living and long-term care services for individuals with ASD be further developed.
