How to Write the Discussion Section of a Scientific Article

The Discussion section explains what the findings of a study mean, compares them with previous research, and evaluates the scientific or practical contribution of the study.

A strong Discussion does not simply repeat the Results section. It explains why the findings may have occurred, how they relate to existing knowledge, what contribution the study makes, and within what limitations the findings should be interpreted.

What Is the Purpose of the Discussion Section?

By the end of the Discussion, readers should understand:

  • What are the most important findings of the study?
  • What do these findings mean?
  • Are they consistent with or different from previous research?
  • What may explain these similarities or differences?
  • What do the findings mean for theory, practice, policy, or future research?
  • What are the main limitations of the study?

How Should the Discussion Begin?

The opening paragraph may briefly remind readers of the most important findings. Avoid repeating all numerical results already presented in the Results section.

The purpose is to identify the main finding that will be interpreted and discussed.

Example: The main finding of this study was that X had a significant effect on Y.

1. Interpret the Main Finding

For each important result, explain its scientific meaning.

A statement such as “a significant relationship was found” is usually insufficient. Explain what the relationship means in relation to the research problem and why it matters.

2. Compare the Findings with Existing Literature

The major findings should be compared with previous research.

The comparison should go beyond simply stating that a result is “consistent with” another study. Authors should also discuss possible reasons for similarities or differences.

Relevant differences may involve methodology, sample characteristics, research context, measurement instruments, cultural factors, or the period in which the study was conducted.

3. How Should Similar Findings Be Discussed?

When a result is consistent with previous research, explain how the present study adds to existing knowledge rather than simply repeating that the findings agree.

4. How Should Conflicting Findings Be Discussed?

Findings that differ from previous research are scientifically valuable and should not be hidden or minimized.

Potential explanations may involve methodological, sampling, cultural, temporal, theoretical, or measurement-related differences.

Where evidence is limited, possible explanations should be presented cautiously rather than as established facts.

5. Explain Unexpected Findings

Results that do not support the original hypotheses or differ from expectations should also be addressed.

Unexpected findings do not mean that a study has failed. They may reveal limitations in existing theories, measurements, assumptions, or understanding of the research context.

6. Explain the Theoretical Contribution

If the study is connected to a theory, model, or conceptual framework, explain whether the findings support, extend, qualify, challenge, or refine that framework.

Avoid vague statements such as “the study contributes to the literature.” Specify where and how the contribution occurs.

7. Explain the Practical Contribution

Where the findings have practical implications, explain who may benefit from them and under what conditions.

Practical implications may relate to healthcare, education, social work, engineering, management, policy, technology, clinical practice, or another relevant field.

Recommendations should remain proportionate to the evidence produced by the study.

8. Avoid Overinterpretation

The Discussion should remain within the limits of the research design and evidence.

For example, an association observed in a cross-sectional study does not by itself demonstrate causality.

Similarly, findings from a small or highly specific sample should be generalized with appropriate caution.

9. Discuss the Limitations

All studies have potential limitations. Reporting them clearly does not reduce the value of the research; it helps readers interpret the findings appropriately.

Limitations may relate to:

In quantitative studies, the main analytical findings should be interpreted in relation to the research questions and hypotheses.

The direction, magnitude, and scientific meaning of relationships or effects should be considered rather than discussing findings solely through p values.

Discussion in Qualitative Research

In qualitative studies, major themes and patterns of meaning should be related to existing literature, the conceptual framework, and the broader research context.

The Discussion should not simply repeat participant quotations. Authors should provide an analytical interpretation of what the findings reveal.

Systematic reviews should discuss overall trends across included studies, similarities and differences in findings, the strength of the evidence, and remaining gaps in knowledge.

Where quality assessment or risk-of-bias evaluation has been conducted, its implications for interpretation of the evidence should also be considered.

What Is the Difference Between Discussion and Conclusion?

The Discussion provides detailed interpretation of the findings and relates them to previous research and broader scientific knowledge.

The Conclusion presents the central message of the study in a shorter, more direct form.

The Conclusion should not simply reproduce the entire Discussion in condensed form.

  • Are the most important findings discussed?
  • Is the meaning of each major finding clearly explained?
  • Are the findings meaningfully compared with relevant literature?
  • Are possible explanations for similarities and differences considered?
  • Is the original contribution of the study clear?
  • Are any claims stronger than the study design and evidence allow?
  • Are limitations discussed honestly and proportionately?
  • Are suggestions for future research specific?
  • Does the Discussion introduce any findings that were not reported in the Results?
